When you think about observing the Sabbath, do you consider it to be one specific day? Is it a time set apart for rest and worship? Have you ever thought about how you could have a spirit of the Sabbath every single day?

Years ago, I adopted the desire to make a gallant attempt at keeping Sunday as a day of rest and worship. I don’t always attain it. Though, when I do, it makes such a difference in my week and my spirit. I never realized how valuable it could be to take a day without touching my electronics, reading, resting, and of course, spending time with God.

A Spirit of the Sabbath

So when I saw the article of a spirit of Sabbath by Jamie Hampton, it caught my eye. At first, I thought you have got to be kidding. It is hard enough to recognize one day, let alone all of them. However, as I read our featured post for today, I realized how much more we can gain by taking on a spirit of the Sabbath in each moment.

Spirit of the Sabbath: Let me warn you to adopt this new rewarding mindset; you might have to take a closer look and examine your heart and head. I certainly did. Click To Tweet

Jamie Hampton mentions five lessons she has been learning about the spirit of Sabbath. She is not shy to admit her struggles. When I read # 1, I found myself nodding my head up and down and saying, “me too.”

Is Your Identity Rooted in Christ?

Honestly, I thought I was pretty secure in my identity. I feel rooted in Christ. My head knows I am loved by God no matter what, but my actions don’t always display this. It is hard for me to sit still. I am a doer and overscheduled at times. How about you?

Hence, this is why God gave me the life verse –

“Be still and know That I am God.”  Psalm 46:10

Now it is not wrong to have the desire to want to help others and accomplish things. However, when we start seeing ourselves as valuable based on what we do, we might need to take a closer look and make sure our hearts and head are in the same place.

Click over and see which of the five lessons resonates with you.

  1. Maree,
I loved Jaime’s post on the spirit of “Sabbath.” I did smile when I read that she chose “Sabbath” over “No.” It helped to think about scheduling in the white space. I’m trying to do that more and really be intentional about shutting down/off all the electronic gadgetry on Sundays. Thanks for sharing her post…new name to me 🙂
    Blessings,
    Bev xx

    1. Bev, I failed BIG time on shutting off the electronic’s on Sunday, and so soon after this post. I love it when I do. Thank you for stopping by and reading. I loved Jaime’s post too. Maree

  2. Ps 46:10 is my verse too Maree ” Let go, relax & know that I am God!”
I’m learning more & more to have the spirit of Sabbath rest but more importantly having the peace of God that passes all understanding enabling thanks in all & every circumstances… Still in the learning stages & haven’t quite reached the goal just yet but allowing the Holy Spirit… 😉
    Bless you,
    Jennifer

    1. Thank you for sharing. I love the peace of God in all circumstances. It always puts me in awe of God. I think we are all in the learning stages until we go home to Jesus. Maree

  3. Jaime definitely knows how to write to the heart. She brought up so many good points in her post. Some of them I might not have wanted to hear, but they all hit home.

    1. Heather,

I agree. Some of them I didn’t want to hear either. It hit home for me too. Thank you for sharing her post on your site. Maree

    1. Theresa,

I think so too. I am trying hard to sit in God’s love without feeling like I need to repay Him for all he does. Maree

  4. Uh-oh. The featured post is something I need to go read right now! I’m attempting to (sort of) take a technology Sabbath on Sundays for 2020. It’s been difficult because I have to prepare so much on Saturdays for it. ha. But it’s the spirit of the Sabbath that I really want to develop too, not just keeping the letter of a law that I created for myself. Thanks for sharing this post, Maree.

    1. It does take a lot of preparation, doesn’t it? I try to stay off from morning until 4 pm on Sundays. Or at least a set time. I too want to develop a spirit of the Sabbath. Happy Saturday! Maree
