Who helps you see your blind spots? Sometimes we make a conscious effort to detect them yet can't quite recognize them on our own.

We all have blind spots. Sometimes we dig our heels in and intentionally choose to ignore them. However, other times we make a conscious effort to detect them yet can’t quite recognize them on our own. Who helps you see your blind spots?

Lately, I have been on a quest to uncover a few of my blind spots. One of the critical elements to revealing what we don’t see is finding the right people to help. It must be someone we trust who is bold enough to share and deliver the news in a loving, non-judgmental way. Not everyone can do this.

The Right One to See Your Blind Spots

The Holy Spirit is my number one source. He is excellent at searching our hearts and revealing what we can’t see. However, many times He uses other people.

One particular day I stormed out of the house and stomped straight across the street to my neighbor’s home to fill her in on how outrageous my husband had been. I had asked him to do what I thought was a simple task which he did, and in my eyes, it was a disaster and all wrong.

As I ranted on, her head nodded up and down as if she understood my pain. When I finally wrapped up my frustration, she paused and inquired, “Can I ask you a question?” I replied, “Of course.” With a soft loving tone, she asked, “Why would you ask your husband to take on that task?” Little did I know she was warming me up for more. The words flowed right out of my mouth, “Well, I need more help.” Quietly she inquired, “Did you think he would do it the way you wanted?” I pondered her words as she finished off with one last question – “Why on earth would you ask him to do something that you want to be done a certain way?”

Now I could have picked up the phone and called someone who would have listened in and said, “Oh, Maree, that is awful. You poor thing.” But instead, I went to someone who loves and knows me and will point out my blind spot.

Oh, I wanted help, which wasn’t all wrong. However, I wanted it done my way and only my way. So, therefore, I was setting my husband up for failure right from the get-go. Do you ever do this? #blindspot Click To Tweet

“How desperately we need God’s truth to shine in on our lives and show us what we wouldn’t otherwise see. How we need His wisdom, cleansing, and guidance. ”

  1. I so get this – Yes! The Holy Spirit and then my husband are the ones who generally helps me see my blind spots – and then he gives me space for it to sink in. For me, it’s understanding the need to humble myself to listen – really listen. Hard message but a good message! Thanks for reminding!

  2. Hi Maree, The blind spots concept is so true! I appreciated your insights. I know people who can lovingly point out like your neighbor, and I’d love to be that for my loved ones too. But you are also right that the number one source is the Spirit. Thank you also for hosting the link up.

  3. I loved Barbara’s post too! I think it hit home with all of us in one way or another. It’s easy to forget that we even have blind spots. But of course we do. And without someone else’s eyes on us, it can hurt our walk with God and with others when we stay blind to them.

  4. Yes, Barbara’s post was thought provoking Maree. I loved your story too & your flowing quote:
“Oh, I wanted help, which wasn’t all wrong. However, I wanted it done my way and only my way. So, therefore, I was setting my husband up for failure right from the get-go.”
We can unintentionally do this to others in many areas of our lives including our Heavenly Father! 😉
    Bless you,
    Jennifer

    1. Ah, yes you bring up a good point. We can do this to God too. Yikes, I better watch that one a little closer.

  5. I loved your story, Maree, certainly hit home for me, too! What a blessing to have a friend to point out your “blind spot” in love. “In love” is so important, I love the way she asked pointed questions, to help you re-frame the situation.

  6. Love your story about your husband. I remember my folks squabbling over this very thing, and now, moi! You have a great neighbor!

  7. Thanks so much for featuring my post, Maree. You bring up a good point. Some people are only too happy to point out our blind spots in a meddling way. It takes grace to help someone see their blind spots in a loving and helpful way. I had one particular pastor’s wife who was very kind yet laid things on the line. I knew I was ready to face an issue squarely and deal with it if I went to her with it.

    1. It was an honor to feature your post. I am so glad you participate each week in our link-up. You are blessed to have a friend who is kind yet honest. They are treasures, aren’t they? Maree
